Our Church's Story

Welcome to St Wilfrid’s Church

A warm, vibrant Anglican church in a historic setting

We are a lively and growing Anglican church, meeting in a beautiful 800-year-old building that’s full of history—but very much alive and being renewed inside! Whether you prefer a traditional or modern style of worship, there’s a place for you here.

At St Wilfrid’s, we seek the manifest presence of God by His Holy Spirit. We love the Scriptures, and our deepest aim is to equip God’s people to do His work—growing in unity, faith, and the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

You’ll find a warm welcome whatever your background, age, or stage of faith. Our congregation is wonderfully varied, and we’d love to help you find your place in our church family.

Vacancy

St Wilfrid’s is currently in a period of vacancy, following the retirement of our vicar, Revd Ludger Fremmar. We give thanks for Ludger’s faithful ministry, leadership, and care for the church and wider community during his time with us.

While we are without a permanent vicar, worship and pastoral care continue as normal. Services are led by visiting clergy and licensed lay ministers, and the life of the church remains active, prayerful, and welcoming. Throughout this time, we trust in Christ as our King, who continues to lead and sustain His church.

The PCC is working closely with the Diocese as we look ahead to the appointment of a new vicar. This time of vacancy is one of transition, but also an opportunity for prayer, reflection, and growing together with hope and confidence in God’s guidance.

Our Vision

“St Wilfrid’s Church: Seeking the Kingdom of God”

We believe the Church is not just a place—it’s a people, gathered in Christ. We’re here to share more than activities: we offer a message of hope and transformation that sits at the heart of everything we do.
